Grizzlies hold off Aces 2-1 Thursday night

Feb 10th, 2017

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Colin Martin and Taylor Richart scored second period goals, and the Utah Grizzlies held off the Alaska Aces 2-1 Thursday night at the Sullivan Arena.

The win pulls the fifth-place Grizzlies to within 4 points of the fourth-place Aces in the ECHL Mountain Division.

No scoring in the first period as both teams didn’t bring their best hockey. Sloppy play resulted in scoring opportunities, but both Kevin Carr in the Alaska net and Kevin Boyle in the Grizzlies net were stellar.

Utah outshot Alaska 9-7 in the period.

The second period featured all the game’s goals. Martin tallied at 7:45 and Richart at 8:50 to forge a 2-0 Utah lead before Pavel Laplante cut the lead in half for the Aces with his second goal of the season at 17:05 from Tyler Ruegsegger and Ryan Trenz.

Shots after two periods favored the Aces 21-19.

No scoring in the third period. Again, scoring opportunities both ways, but the goaltenders were the stars of the night, with Boyle hanging on for the win.

Shots ended up 34-31 Alaska.

Penalty killers were excellent. Utah was 0-8 on the power play, while Alaska was 0-4.

The two teams will complete their three-game series Friday night at the Sullivan Arena. The Aces won the first game Wednesday 4-2.
