Tarasuk heroics lift Aces past Idaho 5-4 in overtime Saturday

Jan 7th, 2017

BOISE, IDAHO – Steve Tarasuk scored 30 seconds into overtime after Alaska rallied with two goals late in the third period to down Idaho 5-4 Saturday at the CenturyLink Arena in downtown Boise.

The win stops an Aces two-game losing skid, and stops Idaho’s 4 game win streak.

Like Friday, the Steelheads got off to a quick start. Joe Basaraba surprised Aces goaltender Michael Garteig with a running wrist shot over Garteig’s left shoulder, glove-side, short-side at 2:06. It was Basaraba’s 9th goal of the season.

Shortly thereafter, Will Merchant, coming off a three assist game last night, chipped in a short-side shot past Garteig at 3:47 and the Steelheads were swimming away.

However, Peter Sivak stemmed the tide with his league-leading 25th goal of the season at 7:54, a turning wrist shot from the left circle. Assists to Stephen Perfetto and Charlie Sampair.

The Aces would tie the game at 13:12. Danny Moynihan, who had a goal in Friday’s game, got his second of the weekend and 10th of the season with a scorching blast from the top of the right circle. Sampair got another helper, as did Tyler Ruegsegger.

Shots at the end of one was 13-10 Alaska.

Both teams would create chances in the second period, but only one came to fruition. A long, rolling puck into the Alaska zone got through the defensemen, and was taken in stride by Anthony Luciani. With Garteig remaining back in his net, Luciani was able to get him to bite and the puck ended up in the back of the net at 10:27, an unassisted goal giving Idaho the 3-0 lead they would take with them into the locker room.

Shots on goal after two: 26-21 Idaho.

The third period started slow, but oh did it finish with a bang!

After Merchant scored his second goal of the game, 10th of the season at 9:48, the Aces needed a spark. They got it from Ben Lake, whose fisticuffs with Kellan Lain at 9:56 ignited Alaska.

Steven Perfetto whacked in his 16th goal of the season at 16:54 to cut the deficit to one at 4-3, then Tim Wallace redirected a Tarasuk slap-pass from low in the left circle past Idaho netminder Branden Komm and we were tied at 4 at the end of regulation.

Overtime was short. At :30 seconds of the 5 minute extra session, Tarasuk banged home a rebound of a Perfetto shot, and the Aces skated off with two points that drew them to within one of first place in the Mountain Division.

Garteig finished with 32 saves and the win, Komm stopped 30 shots.

Alaska was 0-3 on the power play while Idaho went 0-2.

The Aces now return to Anchorage for a three-game series with Orlando that starts Wednesday at the Sullivan Arena.
