Flat Aces drop 6-1 verdict to Steelheads in snowy Boise

Jan 4th, 2017
BOISE, IDAHO - Travis Ewanyk scored twice and Branden Komm stopped 44 Alaska shots as Idaho took the first game of a three-game series Wednesday, 6-1 over the Aces at the CenturyLink Arena.

The loss snapped Alaska’s two-game win streak. The win lifted Idaho into a third-place tie with the Aces in the ECHL’s Mountain Division.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the first period, probably more for Alaska, but it was Idaho scoring first. At 14:34, Travis Ewanyk redirected a Joe Faust shot through Aces goaltender Michael Garteig for his 14th goal of the season. Joe Basaraba also received an assist.

The Steelheads tallied again at 16:52 on the power play. With Alaska’s Tim Wallace off on a roughing penalty, Kellen Lain poked a slow puck toward the net that leaked through Garteig’s knees. Faust and Will Merchant with the assists.

The Aces outshot Idaho 16-14 in the period.

The Steelheads wasted little time increasing their lead to 3-0 on a goal by Ewanyk at 1:01. He was in front of the Alaska net and was in the process of being hauled to the ice by Aces defenseman Nolan Descoteaux when he reached out and poked a puck that had trickled behind Garteig into the net. Joe Basaraba and Kyle Jean got assists.

It was 4-0 Idaho after Anthony Luciani took a long pass from Rob Linsmayer and accelerated into the Aces zone on a breakaway. No deke, just a sharp wrist shot past Gareteig’s glove for his 11th goal of the season at 7:11.

Shots were even at 27 after two periods.

A Tim Wallace power play goal offered the Aces some relief at 2:30 of the third period. With Idaho’s Miro Karjalainen off on an elbowing penalty, Wallace accepted a pass from Steve Tarasuk and drilled a shot by Komm for his 8th goal of the season. Stephen Perfetto also assisted.

However, Idaho had an answer and more. At 9:08 Brandon Trook scored a beauty backhand then Basaraba banged home a centering pass from Merchant at 9:40 for the final 6-1 margin of victory.

Alaska outshot Idaho 45-37 for the game...the Aces were 1-7 on the power play, Idaho 1 for 3.

The Aces and Steelheads will play again Friday and Saturday at the CenturyLink Arena. Game time is 5:10pm AST each day.
