ALASKA’S WINNING STREAK SNAPPED IN 2-1 LOSS AT IDAHO

Nov 21st, 2012

Rookie goaltender Josh Robinson made 30 saves on 31 shots to help the Idaho Steelheads hold off a late charge and beat the Alaska Aces 2-1 on Wednesday night.  The Aces almost erased a two-goal, third period deficit in the final seconds, but an Aces goal as time expired was waived off when it was ruled that the Aces had used a hand to move the puck across the goal line.  Alaska’s six-game winning streak was snapped, as they fell to 11-5 on the season.  The Aces and Steelheads are now tied atop the Mountain Division standings with 22 points in 16 games.  Alaska continues their five-city, six-game road trip on Friday and Saturday against the Utah Grizzlies. All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD.  For more information, please contact the Aces office at 907.258.ACES, or visit them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.

The teams played a scoreless first period to open the game.  Idaho outshot Alaska 13-6.

The Steelheads broke through in the second period with a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead.  Jacob Cepis scored the first goal of the game from the bottom of the slot at 2:29.  Austin Smith, who was just reassigned from Texas (AHL) on Tuesday, made it 2-0 with his rebound from the left edge of the crease at 8:50.  The Steelheads outshot the Aces 11-9 in the period.

The Aces outshot the Steelheads 16-4 in the final period, in an attempt to mount a comeback.  Nick Mazzolini got the Aces on the board with his team-leading, ninth goal of the season.  At 9:15 Mazzolini redirected a Sean Curry shot from the point to get Alaska within a goal.  With an empty net and an extra attacker, the Aces came inches away from tying the game.  Corey Syvret ripped a shot off the crossbar with a few seconds remaining and Mazzolini was ruled to have gloved the rebound over the goal line, disallowing the would-be, game-tying goal.

Mark Guggenberger (10-4) suffered the loss making 26 saves on 28 shots.  Josh Robinson (6-0-1) made 30 saves on 31 shots, earning the win. The Aces went 0-2 on the power play and the Steelheads went 0-4.  Alaska outshot Idaho 31-28 in the game.
