ACES SWEEP WRANGLERS WITH 6-4 WIN

Nov 10th, 2012

The Alaska Aces exploded for a four-goal second period in a 6-4 win over the Las Vegas Wranglers on Saturday night to complete a three-game sweep in Vegas, and cap their five-game road trip.  Nick Mazzolini and Tommy Mele each had two-goal games and the Aces have won three in a row.  Alaska improved to 8-4 on the season, and handed the Wranglers their fifth straight loss.  The Aces now return home on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday to host the Colorado Eagles in Scott Gomez’s return to the Aces.  Tickets are currently on sale at the Aces office, Fred Meyer locations and www.ticketmaster.com.  All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD.  For more information, please contact the Aces office at 907.258.ACES, or visit them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.

The Wranglers scored the game’s opening goal for the first time this season when Scott Campbell buried a rebound at 11:33 on a Las Vegas power play.  Wranglers netminder Joe Fallon made several big saves to keep Vegas in front, but Alaska got a late equalizer while shorthanded.  Nate Thompson finished off a two-on-one with Joey Crabb for Thompson’s first regular season goal with the Aces at 19:45 to even the score 1-1 after one period.  The Aces outshot the Wranglers 17-10.

The flood gates finally opened in the second period as Alaska scored four times.  Nick Mazzolini had a big night for the second straight game scoring twice in the frame.  Mazzolini’s centering pass caromed of skates and slid past Fallon at 3:24 to give the Aces their first lead of the night at 2-1.  The Wranglers tied the score on Andrew Sarauer’s first goal of the season at 5:20.  But the Aces struck three times late to take a commanding lead into the intermission.  William Wrenn scored on a power play at 16:13 to reclaim the lead at 3-2.  Tommy Mele scored 43 seconds later to make it 4-2.  Mazzolini then capped the flurry with a rebound goal at 19:36 to make it 5-2 Alaska after two periods.

Mele scored his second of the night at 8:19 of the third period.  Following the goal, the teams engaged in a line brawl at 8:30, resulting in multiple fights and three ejections.  Las Vegas scored twice late from Eric Lampe and Jamie Fritsch, but Alaska held on for the sweep.

Mark Guggenberger (7-3) earned the win making 28 saves on 32 shots.  Joe Fallon (3-4-1) took the loss, making 36 saves on 42 shots.  The Aces went 1-7 on the power play and the Wranglers went 2-6.  Alaska outshot Las Vegas 42-32 in the game.
