ACES FALL IN 3-1 LOSS AT COLORADO
(Photo courtesy of Mary Jane Watkins/Colorado Eagles) Michael Forney scored twice and rookie goaltender Adam Brown stopped 23 shots in his pro debut to help the Colorado Eagles hang on for a 3-1 win over the Alaska Aces on Saturday night at the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland, CO. the Aces earned a split of opening weekend as their record dropped to 1-1. The Aces now return home to Sullivan Arena on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 to host the Utah Grizzlies. Tickets are currently on sale for both games. The Eagles scored the only goal of the first period when Michael Forney picked the top right corner with a wrist shot from the left circle at 9:25. The Aces had four power play chances, but could not convert and Colorado took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Alaska outshot Colorado 9-8 in the period.
The second period closely resembled the first with Colorado adding to their lead on Forney’s second of the night. On an Eagles power play at 14:42, Forney roofed a backhand in tight over Mark Guggenberger to make it 2-0. The Aces had three more power play chances in the second period, but could not solve rookie netminder Adam Brown.
The Aces got within one when Garry nunn scored from a sharp angle at 12:49 on a terrific setup from Tommy Mele. The Aces had a pair of late power play chances in search of the game-tying goal, but the Colorado PK unit held on. Joey Sides intercepted a pass from center ice and scored into the empty net to seal the Colorado win.
Mark Guggenberger (0-1) suffered the loss making 24 saves on 26 shots while Adam Brown (1-0) earned a win in his pro debut, making 23 saves on 24 shots. The Aces went 0-10 on the power play and the Eagles went 1-9. Alaska was outshot by Colorado 27-24 in the game.
