SCOTT HOWES RETURNS TO ACES LINEUP
The Alaska Aces have been assigned forward Scott Howes from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League, Aces Head Coach Rob Murray announced Tuesday. Howes, who last year was named the Most Valuable Player of the ECHL Playoffs, appeared in six games for Alaska this year, playing the rest of the season in the AHL. He will join the Aces in Las Vegas in time for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday night. The Aces return home for Games 3-6 at Sullivan Arena, beginning Sunday, April 29 at 7:15pm. Individual Aces playoff tickets for the Western Conference Finals will go on sale at 9am on Tuesday morning. Howes, 24, had four points (2g, 2a) in six games for Alaska this year prior to a November call-up to Bridgeport. He missed the first seven games of the season due to an injury suffered last season. Despite playing much of last season while hurt, Howes had a breakout year with the Aces. He had 58 points (22g, 36a) in 59 games after being acquired from Stockton in an October trade. He got even better in the postseason, pacing Alaska’s scoring with 19 points (7g, 12a) in 12 games. He was voted as the Playoff MVP after the Aces claimed their second ever Kelly Cup Championship. Howes is expected to be in the lineup when the Conference Finals begin on Thursday. Last year the Conference Finals were the most productive series for Howes. The Toronto, Ontario native had 10 points (4g, 6a) in a four-game sweep of his ex-team, the Victoria Salmon Kings. He scored the series-clinching goal in Game 4, breaking a tie with 34.9 seconds remaining to complete the sweep. The Aces went 12-0 in the playoffs with Howes in the lineup last year, and he registered points in 11 of those 12 games.
Howes had a solid campaign in Bridgeport this season with 22 points (11g, 11a) in 49 games. He got off to a blistering start, scoring goals in four of his first five games following his call up. He eventually signed a contract with the Sound Tigers and finished the season there. Under former Aces Head Coach, Brent Thompson, Howes helped the Sound Tigers win the Northeast Division. However, Bridgeport was swept out of the opening round of the playoffs. Howes appeared in one playoff game for the Sound Tigers, skating in Sunday’s 4-3 OT loss to the Connecticut Whale, which ended Bridgeport’s season.
In his last game with Alaska, on November 18 at Idaho, he became the fifth player in the ECHL since 1995-96 to register at least 14 shots in a single game. Howes addition to the Aces lineup finalizes their playoff roster at 23 players. They are not allowed to add any more players, unless it is under emergency conditions.
