An evenly played first period tilted in Utah’s favor after a bad Aces giveaway in the final minute. Justin Dowling picked off a pass from the right-wing boards and through the defensive slot, and moved in untouched, beating Gerald Coleman at 19:39. Both teams had 10 shots on goal in the frame.
Alaska turned the tide in the middle period with a pair of goals. The Aces tied the game at 1-1 on Kane Lafranchise’s first professional goal at 1:40 on a power play. Dan Kissel found Lafranchise in the left circle on a cross-ice pass and Lafranchise wristed home the equalizing goal. The score held for most of the frame until Matt Ambroz finished off a rush into the zone with a rebound goal at 16:43. Ambroz’s initial shot from the high slot was stopped, but Ethan Cox kept the play alive, poking a loose puck from the side of the net into the crease where Ambroz slammed it home to give Alaska a 2-1 lead. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 12-4 in the period.
The Aces put the game away at 8:47 of the third period when Tyler Reugsegger found Wes Goldie at the bottom of the slot and Goldie redirected the puck past Shane Owen to make it 3-1 and complete the scoring. Alaska held on for the two-goal victory.
Gerald Coleman (13-3-1) earned the win, making 21 saves on 22 shots, and Shane Owen (3-1-1) made 29 saves on 32 shots, taking the loss. The Aces power play went 1-1, while the Grizzlies went 0-2. Alaska outshot Utah 32-22 in the game.
