ACES EDGED BY REIGN 4-3
Two power play goals, and a pair of strikes from Wes Goldie were not enough for the Alaska Aces on Saturday night as the Ontario Reign held off a late charge to edge the Aces 4-3. The Aces record moved to 7-3-1 on the year. Each team has now won twice on the other’s home ice in the last week, and the clubs will return to the Sully on Sunday at 5:05pm to close their five-game stretch. The Aces surrendered the opening goal for just the second time this season. Friday night’s hero Jeff Corey scored a rebound power play goal 66 seconds into the game to take the lead. The Aces answered back with a power play goal of their own when Wes Goldie scored on a one timer at 11:39.
Goldie struck again in the second at 12:35 on a setup from Scott Howes to give the Aces a 2-1 lead. But the Reign answered with two late goals to reclaim the lead. Lane Caffaro scored a power play goal at 17:08, and Corey added his second of the night on a shorthanded breakaway at 19:32.
The Reign extended their lead in the third when Jon Francisco scored on a breakaway at 5:58 making it 4-2. The Aces got within one when a Goldie shot deflected in off Maxime Tanguay at 15:17 for a power play goal in Tanguay’s first game since opening night. But that’s as close as the Aces would come. They pulled their goaltender late, but could not find the equalizer.
Coleman (5-3-1) made 14 saves on 18 shots, taking the loss. Kellen Briggs (3-5-1) earned the win, with 31 saves on 34 shots. The Aces power play went 2-5, while the Reign went 2-5 as well. The Aces outshot the Reign 34-18.
The Aces and Reign will close the five-game set on Sunday at 5:05pm at Sullivan Arena. It’s the first Fred Meyer Skate with the Aces session this season. Bring your skates, and skate with your favorite Aces players following the game. Ticket specials are currently available through the Aces office.
